In his farewell
speech to Barbados, Charlie Windsor said that “the creation of this
republic offers a new beginning”. He’s right, of course. We can only hope
that the idea catches on – there are a few monarchical states a lot closer to
home that could do with just such a new beginning.

Glib comments passed by a prince who exists in a parallel universe most of the time only apply to former colonies far from home. UK Establishment will not bring itself to contemplate something similar for Wales or even Northern Ireland. Too close to home, might prompt a revolt in Cornwall, Cumbria, Northumbria or even Yorkshire.
