They have a vision of a society based on egalitarian values, steeped in justice and brotherhood. What they don't seem to grasp is the way in which the party to which they belong shares very few of those values.

What has made their position difficult are the political methods that came to be used after 1997 where they mistakenly believed that they had worked, and that Labour had been chosen to govern for what they offered, rather than being the only people left standing when the Thatcherites had been finally thrown out.

The recent Corbyn / Blair dichotomy has compounded matters where Labour is largely seen to be more interested in counting the number of angels dancing on the proverbial pinhead, which has resulted in their paralysis in the face of the Brexit fiasco.

To someone from the outside it is a slow motion car-crash with no good outcome They still have a chance of stopping Brexit, but on recent form it ain't gonna happen.

In Wales, however there is an opportunity for renewal, you'd think, given continuing control of the Senedd - possibly reborn as a new Welsh Socialist party, with filial ties to other European Socialists - with the aim of making Wales a country that reflects the members' beliefs and values. Scottish Labour foundered on being seen as a "branch office" of London, but Labour in Wales does not aspire to be a branch, even, so I'm not holding my breath.

What a waste.

The repoliticisation of the electorate - which should be the main feature of this phase of the game, amid the debris of Brexit - is about convincing people of a truth not a message.Huw Meredyddnoreply@blogger.com
