And, in fairness, I think that the British Establishment has long understood the value of education as a means of taming and absorbing alternative viewpoints.John Dixonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07447224248021209852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4411161795798360588.post-26891427059673527242010-12-01T13:48:21.845+00:002010-12-01T13:48:21.845+00:00I can't help wondering if, over the course of ...I can't help wondering if, over the course of a couple of generations, the Tory Higher education policy might actually have the effect of giving Labour back the auto didactic heart that it had well into the 70s!<br /><br />When people had to leave school and go straight into work because their parents could not afford to send them to college, Labour's very soul was epitomised by people like Nye Bevan and Jim Griffiths, George Brown and many more, including many union leaders, who had the ability to shine in any field, and who could have gained degrees in any university in the land . . . if only their parent had been rich! <br /><br />Instead, they used their abilities to further the cause of their class! (and in Nye's case - his own!) <br /><br />Shall we see that phenomenon rising again in England?
